Step 2 (cont...) Install and Set up WS_FTP

(Step 9) Now you will be asked to fill in your username and password (this will also be sent to you by your web host):

(Step 10) Now you will be asked for the connection type. The default is FTP. This will probably be the one you want. Just click NEXT.

(Step 11) You will now see a window that has all the information that you just typed in, so you can confirm that it is correct. (Your password is not shown for security purposes.) You will see a box checked saying "Connect to this site". As soon as you click 'finish', the program will attempt to connect to your site.

(Step 12) Now on your screen you will see two panes appear. The files on the LEFT are the ones on your computer. What you will need to do is UPLOAD THEM (transfer them) to your website on the Internet. To do this you will simply make a connection with your web host.

You can transfer files two ways using WS_FTP. See the two green arrows right in the middle of the split screen below? If you click the arrow pointing to the RIGHT, you are sending files TO the internet. If you click the arrow pointing to the LEFT, you are DOWNLOADING files (transferring them from the Internet to your computer.)

(Step 13 - TROUBLESHOOTING - You may not need this.) Remember we said earlier that if you accidentally click 'block this connection' that you might run into trouble later? This is where this could occur. (THIS MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.)

IF you find that your connection is refused, it could be (a) because you have the wrong username or password, or (b) because your firewall is blocking the connection.

  • If the message says that your login details are incorrect or being rejected, then you need to check them with the ones provided to you by your web site host. It is up to you to provide the correct login information.

  • If the message says that your CONNECTION is being refused, this is what the message will look like:
