Step 1:

Download MailWasher Pro and install it on your computer. (You install the program by DOUBLE-CLICKING the .exe file you downloaded.) A 'welcome' message will appear, asking you whether you want MailWasher to determine your settings from your email client (e.g. Outlook Express).

The easiest way to set up MailWasher is to click on this option. It will import all the current settings for your email accounts.

Step 2:

If you choose the automatic setup, another box will pop up on your screen showing all the information that MailWasher has detected that will allow it to log in to your email.

You will see the following:

1. A message telling you that MailWasher assumes you are online. (If you are not online, it's a good idea to log on before setting up MailWasher - this way you can check that it's all working.)

2. A list of people in your email address book - it is assumed that these are friends, not spammers.

3. Your email account details (if you have more than one email account, they will all appear here.)

Click on the "Accept" button to continue to the next step.

Step 3:

Now you get a message telling you that your MailWasher Pro setup is complete.

For MailWasher to work properly, you now need to turn off automatic checking in your email program. This is easy to do... MailWasher even gives you a "Show Me How" link to click so that you can see exactly how to do it.

Now click "Finished" and you're done!

Step 4:

When MailWasher first opens, a box will appear to show you 3 simple steps to using MailWasher to get rid of spam. By default, a box is checked requesting that this guide show every time MailWasher starts. As soon as you are confident using the program, you can UNcheck this box and it will not appear again.

Step 6:

Now you just view the mail on your server, and decide which email you want to download to your computer. MailWasher will identify known spam for you. Others, you can choose to delete so they don't clog up your inbox.

When you use MailWasher, you will see that it tries to identify mail as (1) coming from friends, (2) "probably legitimate" or (3) "probably spam". The "learning" column (far left) has two boxes for you to click - an envelope image means 'friends' and the trash can means 'spam' (or unwanted email).

If you click the first column, the 'trash' column, you have classified email as being UNWANTED. Any future email from the same source will be BOUNCED. You won't have to keep checking the box.

If you click the second column, the 'friends' column, then mail from that source is, in future, classed as from a 'friend'. It will automatically be approved from download.

There is a THIRD option - simply to delete email. You can read your email while it's on the server, and decide whether you want to download it to your computer (regardless of whether it's from a friend or whether it's spam.) Sometimes you may not want email, even if it's from a friend. (e.g. chain letters, jokes, or very large image files like photos.)

MailWasher is particularly useful if you are downloading email to your laptop when you are away from home, and paying high mobile phone charges. You can delete large files or unwanted email from the server, and avoid lengthy download times and/or costs.

NOTE 1: If you are using Norton Internet Security, a message will pop telling you that MailWasher is trying to access the Internet. Under "What do you want to do?" You need to select "Always allow connections from this program on all ports".

NOTE 2 When you click the "Process Mail" button in Mailwasher, your main email program will open. (In this example, we will assume you are using Outlook Express.) Because you have turned off automatic checking, you will need to click the "Send/Receive" button at the top to import the email that you have not deleted. (The 'good' email!)
