How The Heck Do I...

Use WS_FTP
to upload files to a Website?

Step 3 (cont...) Connecting to Your Site and Transferring Files

OK... When you connect to your web site, the (initially empty) RIGHT HAND PANE will fill with files. (If your site is new, you may not have many files in there.)

VERY IMPORTANT: IF YOU SEE A FOLDER (on the right hand side) CALLED public_html, you MUST double-click on it to open it. All your files have to go inside that folder - or nobody will be able to see them. (Note: Not EVERY website will have a folder called public_html. It depends which web host you use... but many DO have this.) You will see that the above diagram has this folder.

Here it is as a close-up:

When you double-click on it to open it, this is what you'll see: the "public_html" label moves up to the FOLDER list at the top - this shows you which folder you are working IN.

Now, choose which of your files (your .htm or .html web pages, and perhaps an mp3 file or a PDF file) you want to send to your website (upload). These will be files on your computer, so they will be on the LEFT side of your screen. Highlight those files, and click on the green arrow that is pointing to the RIGHT. (This means that you are moving the files FROM your computer across TO your website.) You especially need to make sure your INDEX page is uploaded to inside the public_html folder (if you have that folder) - because the index page is the one that the search engines look for - it will be your HOME PAGE.

You will see a box at the bottom of your screen (the status box) filling up with a blue colour as the file uploads. When it is finished, you will hear a sound that lets you know your file transfer is complete.

Now look at the right-hand pane (the one that shows your files on the web). It will now show the files you have just uploaded.

Check your website in your browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape or Firefox, whatever you use) and make sure that the pages (or other files) that you have been working on are now on your website.

Close WS_FTP until next time!
