How The Heck Do I...

Step 1

Is your
site ready?

AFTER you have registered your website with ThirdSphere, and BEFORE you create your homepage, try typing in the name of your site - e.g.  (www.WhateverYouCalledIt.com) You'll see something like this:

This is a bit like letting the whole world see your site in its underwear. :-( Eeek! You need to create a HOME PAGE (index page) as soon as possible! So let's do it..

Go to your site's CONTROL PANEL. Your 'welcome' email will tell you where to find this.

For example, my instructions to access my site www.BestInfoHere.com looked like something like this (I've changed identifying details):

If your domain name is not available yet use
this information to access your control panel:

http://web20.thirdspherehosting.com:2082
http://web20.thirdspherehosting.com/controlpanel/
Username: your-user-name
Password: db1hgyp2 (example)

Once your domain name becomes available, you
should use the following information instead:

http://bestinfohere.com:2082/
http://bestinfohere.com/controlpanel/
Username: your-user-name
Password: db1hgyp2

If you can see the 'site in its underwear' that I've shown above, that means your domain name is available. So you would use the SECOND lot of options above.

(If you just get a 'page not found' message, that means your site has not yet propagated. Wait until you can see the above "index" page before you start using BleepSoft.)

Let's assume that you have waited to create your home page until your site is visible (you MUST NOT use BleepSoft for your site pages until this has happened), so we'll use (in my case) http://bestinfohere.com:2082/

A box will pop up asking you to enter your username and password:

Enter your details, and the CONTROL PANEL page will open up in front of you.

Step 2

Entering Via The Control Panel

The Control Panel looks like this. (Let me tell you, it's much more user-friendly than many control panels!) You'll see your website name at the top.

We'll look at all of these sections in more detail later. Right now, the one we want is on the top right hand side - "web building tools". Click "enter".

On the next screen to appear, click "Click here to run BleepSoft". (The first time you enter BleepSoft, you will be asked to fill in a few details to activate your web building tools. This will take only a moment.) NOTE: Note the warning sign. If your domain name has not yet propagated as shown in the first diagram on this page, DO NOT use these tools. Yes... I'm repeating this, because it is important!

Step 3

Inside
BleepSoft

When you click on "Click here to run BleepSoft", and you have entered your first-time details, you will see this...

Click the "Login" button... and you will see your File Manager. This is where you'll be working with all your site pages.

As you can see, there's not much there yet! You'll see:

(1)  a folder labelled "cgi-bin"... you don't need to worry about that for your basic website building.

(2) an "images" folder - this will contain any photos, clip-art etc that you upload to your site.

The three buttons you see will be all you'll need to create a basic website. What do they mean?

The Upload File Button: This will be the button you'll use to upload photos and documents (usually PDF documents) from your computer. NOTE: This is restricted to relatively small files. If you upload a larger e-book, you'll have to use another method. We'll go into that later.

The Create New File Button: This is the button you'll be using most of the time, to create new web pages. (Think of a web page as a 'file'.)

The Create Folder Button: You can create different folders (or directories) on your website. (For example, if you create a sub-domain this will be in a separate folder.) You might choose to have a folder for a children's writing site, and another for books you write for adults. Or you might have one for fiction and one for non-fiction. This will all be explained later.
